We were absolutely honoured to be asked by Valentina D'Efilippo & Miriam Quick to collaborate with them on this incredible data visualisation tribute to David Bowie's amazing music.
The project visualises data from Bowie’s 1969 track Space Oddity on a series of 10 specially engraved records with accompanying posters, plus a moving image piece.
While Miriam & Valentina created the majority of the project, we were tasked with contributing animated data visualisations for the moving image piece, based on Valentina's beautiful designs and using Miriam's intricately researched data.
Using Processing we constructed a 3D visualisation model, that combined the structural musical data (what instruments are playing at what point in time) with audio levels for each track.
Creating the visualisation in this way allowed us to export a series of views of the model giving Valentina plenty of multi-camera footage to use in the final motion piece.
Finally we created a 3D generative "point cloud" portrait of David Bowie as the closing shot of the motion piece.
